Hi everyone,

As the promotion test is around the corner, here are some tips for you.

1) Rest.

The test will be quite long and you guys gotta have a good night sleep in order to be in top condition for the day of the test. Sleep early and drink more water. Fruits and stuff can do too!

2) Prepare Early.

Last minute work will not help you much. You still have some time. Start working on it now and you will not panic at the final moments.

3) Confidence.

The key towards promotion. If you are confident of winning, you have already won half the battle. Do your prayers, put on your lucky charm or whatever to boost your confidence for the test. Do remember, if you think you can, you can.

4) Recollection.

The one year of constant training will not be put to waste. Remember how your ics have taught you. Recall what is the correct way of shouting/doing the drills. You know yourself best upon how much you have learnt, and it's time to put it to good use, for promotion.

5) Mind Your Words.

No, it's not vulgarities. It's to take note of how you pronounce your commands and also giving instructions. You don't need an extremely loud voice to pronounce your commands correctly. Just ensure that they are clear for the squad that you are commanding to listen. MOI is so much easier with so many years of English oral practice. How you do it in the exam hall can also be applied here!

6) Take a (S I P).

Haha nah not consuming a beverage.

Need we mention more?

7) Our Final Advice.

Make full use of everything you've learnt. Make sure you try your best. If you tried your best, don't regret upon the aftermath as you know this was your maximum ability. For those who've failed before, tell yourself you're gonna do better than the previous time. Tell yourself you are not gonna commit the same old mistakes again.

By synthesizing the popular game Angry Birds with campcraft skills, St. Joseph's Institution's NPCC Unit organized the Inter-Unit Angry Birds Competition on 05 November 2011.

"Home – Keeping It Together" is the theme for Total Defence 2011. The campaign seeks to remind Singaporeans that Singapore is worth defending on all fronts, simply because it’s home.

Total Defence 2011 is anchored on the song "Home", a Singaporean classic written by Dick Lee and originally sung by Kit Chan. The lyrics of "Home" reflect Singaporeans’ treasured memories and shared dreams for the future, whether they are living in Singapore or abroad.

Also, look out for the "Home" music video which will be launched on 15 February 2011. Nan Hua NPCC is proud to have played a part in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games 2010 in Singapore, with cadets helping out as student volunteers to our visitors from Hong Kong SAR and Lesotho.

MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL@NANHUA!

Nan Hua High celebrated its annual Mid-Autumn Festival last Friday. This year, apart from our marshalling duties, NHNP set up a booth to help in the raising of funds for a charity organisation, MINDS.

Last Farewell

SINGAPORE: Police are currently advising members of the public to stay away from parts of Clementi near Block 411 Commonwealth Avenue West. Operations are going on to render safe a war relic that was found at the construction site there (near Nan Hua High School).

Police will be diverting traffic from Clementi Road, in the direction of Bukit Timah from the junction with AYE and Clementi Road, in the direction of Bukit Timah from the junction with Dover Road.

People Involved:

Secondary 4 Cadets and Secondary 2/3 Cadets who have valid reasons for missing the Promotion Test in November 2008.

Secondary 2/3 Re-Test

Secondary 2 and 3 cadets who missed the November 2008 due to valid reasons have to submit their documentary proof to the Squad I/Cs for verification. They will have to inform the Administrative Department that they are going for the Re-Test.

Staff Sergeant Test:

Secondary 4 cadets going for Staff Sergeant have to prepare a lecture as part of their Method of Instruction (MOI) component. Topics has already been given by the CIs in early January 2009.

The following article seeks to highlight the contributions made by our Nan Hua NPCC alumni, Cadet Inspector Lee Chee Hoe and at the same time, encourage our cadets to do likewise or even better.

Epitomising the importance of servant leadership (placing others before self) and the passion for service to the community are values which Nan Hua NPCC hopes to imbue in our cadets upon graduation. Through this article, we hope to send out a message to all that one can make a difference to those around us, no matter how small and can each be successful in one's own right.

Meet the 'adopted son' of
Philippine province

Mr Lee Chee Hoe, 22, was "adopted" by Concepcion province after going there as a volunteer to construct buildings and do electrical work for the poor. He also taught basic IT skills to students (above) in a local school there.

He is born and bred in Singapore, and a loyal son of this land.

Yet, this national serviceman is also adored by the Filipinos, and close to the heart of many there.

Mr Lee Chee Hoe, 22, has a unique relationship with the little-known province of Concepcion, Iloilo, in the Philippines.

He is their 'adopted son' - a moniker earned, complete with signed and sealed certificate to prove it, after a month-long community service trip there while still a Singapore Polytechnic student.

What was meant to have been a short stint, helping to install electrical cables and points in the homes of the poor with other student volunteers, resulted in a love affair with the region.

To the group's surprise, they were presented with official certificates from the municipal government at the end of their trip, giving them honorary 'adoption' status.

The province's officials must agree to the 'adoption' certificates, which are then signed and presented by the mayor. The 'adopted' children also act as goodwill ambassadors for the region.

Mr Lee, who is now doing national service, said he and his friends were very touched. 'We felt like our contributions were being recognised and we felt closer to the people,' he said.

While in the Philippines, he saw 'people going hungry, going around looking for food'. The sun was so hot and shelter so meagre that even doing electrical work indoors gave the students sunburn, he said.

'It's something we have never experienced in Singapore. Our Government does such a good job.'

At times, he would sit with the villagers and try to talk to them, even if only through body language. 'After some time, you develop feelings for them,' he said. 'I think that even five, 10 years on, the locals will remember us.'

His interest sparked, Mr Lee returned to Concepcion on two more occasions while still at the polytechnic - once to help construct buildings, and the other to do further electrical work.

At the end of the third trip, he was given a 'loyalty award' from the same government for having volunteered thrice in a row.

For a few days during his third trip, he even had a rich Filipino 'father' and 'mother' for a while, as part of a homestay.

Mr Lee lived for three days with them, calling them his 'bum-bum' and 'nai-nai' (father and mother in Filipino dialect).

'After weeks of no television and no computer, I stepped into his house and there was a huge 45-inch plasma TV, and the whole bungalow was air-conditioned,' he said.

When told of her son's new 'status', his real-life mother said with a smile: 'Does this mean you get discounts when you buy things there?'

Maybe not, but she may get to meet his Filipino 'family' as he is planning a trip there this year with friends, colleagues or family to show them around

REVIEW OF NPCC UNIFORM

There will be changes to the NPCC Uniform in the near future. Details of the implementation will be announced in due course.

The purpose of the proposed changes is to enhance the corporate identity of NPCC and to create a stronger brand name for NPCC. More importantly, the proposed changes seek to avoid NPCC Officers and cadets being mistaken by members of the public as police officers, thereby ensuring their safety in the face of potential criminals.
